The project involved the stabilisation of a 1000 m² embankment above a new build supermarket complex in Bo'ness, Scotland.

Installation of 170 self-drilling anchors of up to 12m in length together with retaining mesh and geo-matting was required to produce a stable embankment and promote vegetation growth. All the anchors drilled utilised the Weldgrip R32N self-drilling anchor system, together with a variety of sacrificial drill bits to suit the varying types of strata (heavily faulted basalt and sandstones).

The anchors were installed using a purpose designed drilling platform built by Vertical Access Ltd. and mounted on standard & specialised telehandeling equipment.

The system of work allowed for high production rates and easy drilling operations giving significant time savings on project scheduling. A mixture of grout flush & air flush drilling operations were used depending upon local ground makeup.

Comments from Vertical Access Geotechnical Project Manager Shaun Ainley:

“The use of the Self Drilling Anchor system in combination with our purpose built drilling platform allowed for rapid production & location repositioning. This allowed the meshing stage of the project to proceed ahead of schedule".
