Reinforcement of the Chatham Dock walls is part of a larger project to redevelop the old naval yard for business and private construction purposes. The old harbour walls were once part of a large Royal Naval base and have protected the site from tidal flows of the river Medway for many years.

To ensure the future protection of the site the dock walls were strengthened. The project involved repairing old brickwork, increasing the height of the wall by casting concrete parapets on top of the existing structure and reinforcing sections of the old wall by installing reinforcement vertically down through the brick and concrete structure.

Weldgrip Gripforce ® hollow injection tubes were used for the vertical reinforcement. The tubes are constructed from a high strength specialist 'E' glass and Vinylester hybrid material developed to withstand the harsh environments typically found in this type of environment.

The injection tubes have an O.D/I.D. of 31/15mm with tensile and shear strengths of 480kN and 195kN respectively. The tubes used are 6m in length with 100mm of thread at one end to facilitate the attachment of a grout injection adapter.

The Gripforce ® tubes were installed into 45mm diameter holes at 0.5m centres on either side of the wall. On the river side the tubes were installed through the granite coping stones and on the land side through the concrete wall structure.
To maintain the aesthetics of the harbour wall all the tubes were countersunk into the wall.

The holes drilled into the granite were overcored (100mm long by 75mm diameter) with the overcored material being replaced after the tubes were installed. The holes were drilled with pneumatic rotary percussive drilling machines using hollow hexagon extension drill rods and 45mm cross head bits and an air flush system to remove the drilled debris.

After drilling, the holes were grouted by pumping cementitious material through the Gripforce ® hollow tubes, this forced out any excess water concentrated in the bottom of the holes as well as ensuring the whole 6 metres of tube was fully grouted.
The Weldgrip Grout System, which consists of a 75 litre mixing bin with an air motor to rotate the mixing paddle and a standard ST481 lift pump, was used to mix and deliver the grout.

The system gave full encapsulation of the Gripforce ® tubes and filled any internal voids and breaks within the harbour wall.
