The Coalfields Link Road project is part of the coalfields
regeneration scheme to the north-east of Barnsley.
The project involved construction of a new road and stabilisation
of a steep embankment running parallel to the road to carry
a footbridge.
|
Stabilisation of the embankment
was achieved by using Weldgrip 22mm diameter Gripforce ®
Soilnails in lengths of four and five metres.
The embankment was then covered with a plastic mesh, the mesh
being retained by means of non-metallic end plates fixed to
the composite soil nails and nuts.
|
|
 |
The BBA approved system offers a 120 year working life, providing
both reinforcement of the embankment and control of the surface
of the excavation.

Comments from the Keller site engineer:
“Use of the Weldgrip Gripforce ®
bar gave us several advantages over using a steel reinforcement
system –
1: It was light and easy to handle.
2: The bar was delivered to site complete
with spacers and hence ready to use – we needed no assembly
crew
or area.
|
 |
3: Use of the Gripforce
® bar meant that no additional corrosion protection
was required.
4: All of the above meant that installation
was simpler and faster.”
