Erosion of the roadside embankment alongside the A259 coast road at Dymchurch required a stabilization project be undertaken to support and stabilize affected areas of the embankment. The areas of erosion were in danger of extending into the road carriageway.

Reinforcement and consolidation was achieved using the Weldgrip Gripforce® Composite Self-Drilling Nail System.

6m long x 31/15mm anchors were used to reinforce the compacted ground underneath the road and to retain gabion mattresses. The nails were installed using a rotary percussive drill mast. 4 x 1.5m lengths were connected by couplers and utilized a 51mm sacrificial bit and grout flushing. Non-metallic custom made endplates together with specially designed Weldgrip stainless steel nuts were used for the nail head.

John Judge, Technical Manager of Keller Ground Engineering commented on the project - “Weldgrip Gripforce® Self-Drilling Nails were used because of their long term protection against corrosion and the speed of installation of the nail system”. Their unique formulation allow the nails to be installed with percussive drilling machines through sands, gravels, clays and compacted soils. Modified Vinylester and special glass used in the manufacturing process give excellent corrosion resistance.

The lightweight anchor system has an engineered thread and is complimented by a wide range of accessories, including 316 stainless steel couplers and end fittings (UTS 215kN) together with a range of standard and purpose designed drill bits, end plates and adaptors.

Self-Drilling Composite Soil Nails are a cost effective alternative to cased holes in materials where hole collapse is possible.

The light weight and ease of handling in confined situations alleviates the need for heavy plant and the restrictions associated with double corrosion protected nails, whilst providing excellent long term corrosion protection.

The use of Weldgrip Gripforce® products in marine environments on projects such as the Dawlish Sea Cliff stabilisation, Chatham Dock Wall repair, Whitehaven Harbour Wall reinforcement and Kingsand Sea Defence Wall reinforcement offer a proven track record for the BBA certified product.
