The Ramsden Bellhouse & Kent Hill project is located near Billericay in Essex. The purpose of the works was to strengthen the embankments using soil nailing techniques.
Can Geotechnical
Approximately 325m of the Up embankment were considered to have a factor of safety against slope failure of less than 1 : 1.15.

Both the Up and Down lines required higher than average maintenance, to correct line and level discrepencies. The combination of gabions, soil nailing and mesh with geotextile increased the factors of safety and improved the serviceability of the two sections of line. The tops of the embankments were strengthened using PVC coated heavy duty gabions infilled with limestone, retained using R38 self drilling soil nails, galvanised and fusion bonded epoxy coated for the last 3m length.

The remainder of the slopes were stabilised with a combination of R38 & R32 soil nails of length between 12m & 19m in length. A C350 geotextile was used to prevent surface erosion and was overlaid with double twist PVC coated mesh joined by stainless steel clips. The bespoke load plates were designed and manufactured to grip the mesh and accommodate the slope of 30 degrees.
